From exhaustion to independence: A rehabilitation success story that brought Mary home again.
When Mary Smith arrived at VMP Healthcare and Community Living, she was exhausted in every way. After spending most of the year in and out of hospitals, she shared that she felt “tired,” “drained,” and “disappointed.” She explained that she did not know what would happen next and had no energy left even to try.
Physically, Mary faced significant challenges. She described that she “couldn’t walk,” “couldn’t move [her] legs too much,” and “couldn’t talk.” Even lifting her arm was not possible when she first arrived. “Physically, I couldn’t really do anything,” she said.
Mary was first hospitalized in September 2024 and formally began her therapeutic journey at VMP on February 12, 2025. She arrived very weak and debilitated. Mary relied on a ventilator to help her breathe and a tube for her nutrition. Despite all of these challenges, Mary’s rehabilitation success story is now one of strength, skillful care, and exceptional teamwork.

The Turning Point: A Rehabilitation Success Story Begins
Mary’s recovery began once she started working with VMP’s therapy team. “When I started doing therapy,” she said, “that is when I started getting motivated.” Participating in sessions, along with support from her family, helped her see what might be possible.
She spoke highly of the therapists, recalling how patient and encouraging they were. “The physical therapy, they were very good. Very patient. They pushed you, and I guess that is what I needed,” she said. “They really motivate you. ‘You can do it, Mary. Yes, you can get up.’” Every small milestone, whether standing a little longer, moving her arm, or taking a step, was celebrated and helped Mary recognize her growing strength.
Mary emphasized that her progress was supported not only by therapy but by the entire care team. She shared that the aides and nurses helped her stay positive, cheered her on through challenging days, and made her feel truly cared for. Their encouragement, along with the steady support of the office staff, played an important role in keeping her motivated.
Heading Home for the Holiday
Last week, Mary reached a milestone she had been working toward for months. She headed home just in time to spend Thanksgiving with her family.
“I am proud that I was able to actually get up and do the things I did not think I could do,” she shared. She expressed how much it meant to feel her strength return and to look forward to being home with her husband again.
Mary expressed her gratitude to the therapy team, aides, nurses, and office staff who cared for her throughout her stay. Their encouragement and support made a tremendous difference in her recovery, transforming months of uncertainty into a rehabilitation success story that culminated in regained independence and confidence, allowing her to step into her next chapter.
